The Irish chain is such a beautiful, classic quilt. I especially love two color quilts, so these are high on my list of favorites. They're fairly simple, composed of a solid block and a nine-patch block! I always love a good tutorial, so I thought I'd add one to my blog in case you'd like to make one of these for yourself!

Irish Chain Quilt

finished size: 67.5"x 67.5"

Fabric Requirements: 

Color A: 2.75 yards (shown in white)

Color B: 1.25 yards (shown in red)

Cutting: 

Color A

(8) 8"x WOF (width of fabric)//subcut to (40) 8"x 8" squares

(9) 3"x WOF

Color B

(15) 3"x WOF

Instructions: 

Making a Nine-Patch Square

1. Begin with alternating your 3"x WOF strips B/A/B. (fig 1) Place your strips right sides together and sew with a 1/4" seam. Press all seams towards fabric B. Repeat 5 more times with this arrangement.

2. Now take each B/A/B strip set, and subcut the strips into 3" segments. (fig 2) Each strip set should result in 14 pieces, resulting in 84 pieces total. Set these aside.

3. Now take 3"x WOF strips and arrange A/B/A. (fig 3) Again, place your strips right sides together and sew with a 1/4" seam. Press all seams towards fabric B. Repeat this 2 more times.

4. Take each A/B/A strip set and subcut the strips into 3" segments. (fig 4) Each strip set should result in 14 pieces, resulting in 42 total.

5. Using two B/A/B segments and one A/B/A segment, arrange as shown. (fig 5) Place segments right sides together and nest seams. Sew with a 1/4" seam and press seams open. You've completed one nine patch! Repeat to make 41 Nine Patch Squares total!

Assembling Your Quilt Top

6. Assemble your rows as shown. (fig 6) You will have 9 rows total. Five rows begin and end with the Nine-Patch Square and four rows begin and end with your solid square. Place blocks right sides together, sew with a 1/4" seam and press all seams towards your solid square.

7. Sew your rows together, alternating between the ones that begin with your Nine-Patch and the ones that begin with your solid square. Place the rows right sides together and nest seams as you go. Sew with a 1/4" seam and press seams open.

8. You've completed you Irish Chain Quilt top! Finish it using your desired method!
