Classic Quilt Blocks: Sawtooth Star
I don't know if there's a most popular quilt than a star quilt. And the Sawtooth Star definitely seems to be at the top of that list. According to the National Museum of American History, this block predates the Civil War, and is sometimes referred to as the Evening Star block. However it first came about, it certainly hasn't lost momentum and is a mainstay in modern and traditional quilts alike.
A quick search on Pinterest/Instagram, and here are some I'm inspired by:
1. This handquilted/multi-color version by Elizabeth McMurtry is so lovely. It's the perfect combination of planned and yet surprising, and her use of the square in a square blocks as the center (even for the "solid" stars) adds so much interest.
2. This late 1800's version made by Betsy Baker Mead gives a completely different feel with a mostly two-tone look. Then a single block with a contrast is added to the center and it creates a whole new vibe.
3. Or take a note from Sydney Lee and use some hand-dyed indigo for a two-tone masterpiece...
However you decide to make this quilt, you have a really good chance of creating an instant heirloom. Because the block is so classic, you can really play around with the fabrics and you'll end up with something with staying power.
I created the Inverted FQ Star quilt tutorial and have an extensive blog post there for making this block. But you can also find the single block pattern here that will allow you to make just one for a sampler or to practice.
